Paul led her outside. She wondered why, but didn't ask.

“I thought you might like to take a walk with me.” He offered his arm.

She smiled and accepted it. As they walked he looked up at the sky. “The stars here are brilliant.”

She looked up as well. The bright glow of the stars dazzled her. “I see why you love it here. It’s beautiful. In the city, it was nearly impossible to see this many stars in the sky.”

“I hope you might one day come to love it as well.” He stopped and glanced over at her. “I can tell that you're unhappy, Mae.”

“I'm just adjusting.” Mae met his eyes. “But I appreciate how concerned you are about my comfort.”

“I am concerned.” He slid his arm from hers and gave her hand a light squeeze. “Anything that troubles you, please, share it with me. I value honesty above all else. If I know that I can trust you, and you know that you can trust me, nothing will ever tear us apart.”

Mae's heart fluttered. Never did she imagine that Paul would be such an honest and thoughtful man. Maybe she didn't feel lucky about her circumstances, but moment-by-moment he was winning her heart in a way that surprised her.

Her mind flashed back to the woman she'd met that day. “Do you know someone named Abigail?”

His lips tightened and his face hardened. He dropped her hand and looked away from her so sharply that she was sure she angered him. Her breath caught in her throat. She'd never seen him react that way before.

“Don't mention her. No, wait.” He looked back at her with fury in his eyes. “Why did you mention her?”

Mae took a step back. “She came into the store today and introduced herself.”

“I bet she did.” He narrowed his eyes. “She's a vicious woman, Mae. Pay no mind to her.”

“She's beautiful.” Mae glanced away from him. “I gather you two knew each other well.”

He sighed, running his hands through his hair, as though frustrated. “If I expect honesty from you, then I will try my hardest to be honest with you. Yes, I knew her well. We were engaged.”

Mae's heart sank. “Really? What happened?”

“The ceremony was planned. A few weeks before our wedding, she went to one of those meetings.”

“Those meetings?” Mae raised an eyebrow.

“A Suffragette meeting. A few days after she showed up at my door, and insisted that I agree to never having children.” His cheeks grew dark red. “I insisted the opposite. I told her I wanted children, and she accused me of trying to control her.”

Mae bit into her bottom lip. “And?”

“And, she still wanted to go through with the marriage, but I refused.” He sighed and looked over at her. “I do believe that women are equal to men and should have the same rights Mae. I do believe a woman should get to decide if she wants to have children or not. But in my heart, I am certain that I want to have children.
